The four numbers to watch, and the twenty to ignore

A cluttered dashboard doesn't help you make decisions. Four metrics are enough.

Most dashboards show what's easy to measure, not what lets you act.

The four that matter

  1. Monthly recurring revenue — the only size metric that matters.
  2. Twelve-month retention by cohort — the real measure of health.
  3. Visit-to-membership conversion rate — how effective your page is.
  4. Average revenue per member — tells you whether your tiers are well built.

What you can ignore

View counts, likes, free-follower counts, overall traffic. These numbers rise when everything is going well and never tell you what to do when everything is going badly.
