Migrating platforms without losing half your members
Direct debit mandates don't transfer. Here's the sequence that keeps the damage under fifteen percent.
No platform can hand off a direct debit mandate to another one — that's a legal constraint. Every member has to re-authorize. The whole challenge is making that step easy and worth doing.
The four-step sequence
- Day -21: import the page without publishing anything. Check how it renders.
- Day -14: announce it on the old platform and by email. Say why, not just where.
- Day -7: a perk reserved for members who migrate — a post, a file, an annual discount.
- Day 0: switch over, keeping the old page live in read-only mode for two months.
What not to do
Closing the old page on the day of the switch. Members who see the announcement three weeks later land on a dead page and don't dig any further.
I lost 40% of my supporters by migrating without warning. The second time, I announced a month ahead and kept 88% of them.
